Skeletal Expansion for Kids, Teens, and Adults in Ashland, KY and Portsmouth, OH

Skeletal expansion gently widens the upper jaw to create healthy space for crowded teeth, improve the way your bite fits, and set up a broader, more confident smile. At Brace Yourself Orthodontics, Dr. Jay uses modern digital scans and low-profile expanders so treatment feels straightforward from the first visit. Schedule a complimentary consultation with our team in Ashland, KY or Portsmouth, OH to see if expansion is right for you.

Your upper jaw has a natural seam in the palate. With a custom expander, Dr. Jay guides the seam to open gradually, then stabilizes it as new bone forms. The result is more room for teeth, improved arch shape, and a smile that works as good as it looks. Growing kids are ideal candidates, teens do very well, and many adults can benefit depending on goals and anatomy.

Traditional Rapid Palatal Expansion

Traditional Rapid Palatal Expansion uses a small appliance that connects to teeth and is an excellent option for growing patients. It allows controlled turns that create space efficiently and comfortably, then holds the result while new bone sets. For information about advanced adult expansion solutions, visit our separate MARPE page.

More space for crowded or rotated teeth, a broader balanced smile, crossbite correction, improved arch form, and for some patients easier nasal airflow. Expansion often reduces the need to remove permanent teeth and builds a strong foundation for braces or aligners.

The staff was very helpful! Dr Joe and Kathy were great with my daughter. All who were involved in her care were very nice.

The team was extremely caring, understanding, and flexible to my schedule. They squeezed me in first thing in the morning before any other clients to scan for a new retainer after my prior one broke. Although the new ones typically take a week to finalize, the team had mine done within 2 hours so I could get it before I left on a long trip. Great facility and kind, educated staff!

How long does expansion take?

Activation typically lasts a few weeks, followed by a stabilization phase while new bone forms. Total timelines vary by age and goals. Dr. Jay will review your plan in detail at your consult.

Will it change how I look?

Expect a naturally wider smile and better arch shape. Facial changes are usually subtle and positive.

Can adults do this?

Many adults are candidates for expansion depending on their anatomy and goals. If an  advanced approach is recommended, Dr. Jay will discuss options and direct you to our  MARPE page for full details.

Will I still need braces or aligners?

Often yes. Expansion creates the foundation, then braces or Invisalign aligners fine-tune alignment and bite under Dr. Jay’s guidance.

Is it uncomfortable?

Most patients describe pressure more than pain, especially during early turns. Over the  counter relief is usually enough for the first day or two.

Brush carefully around the appliance after meals and before bed. Floss daily with a threader or a water flosser. Rinse with a fluoride mouthwash to keep everything fresh. Avoid very hard or sticky foods that could stress the appliance. If something feels loose, place orthodontic wax if needed and contact our office. You will receive a simple turning schedule and quick check-ins with Dr. Jay. Most people feel pressure for a day or two when turns begin, which usually settles quickly.
